Portraits

I’ve been on a couple of coloured pencil workshops lately, both doing portraits. Unusual as I don’t often do portraits of people, so to do two in a short time was very different!

The first was by a wonderful portrait artist called David Sandell and his workshop was truly inspiring. We spent the first half of the time not drawing but learning how to draw a likeness of the subject – how to measure and capture the pose. Then using a limited palette of colours, we created a portrait. I have a long way to go before I am half as good as David, but I was inspired to try more of this and I came away with a decent portrait, done in a style that is different for me.
